SiMaTEx, the exercise to test the functioning of the Sicilian-Maltese civil protection system developed by the SimitTharsy project, has just ended.
The assumed scenario was that of a tsunami reaching the coasts south of Syracuse, one hour after an earthquake on the island of Crete.
The exercise was organized by the Sicilian Region – Regional Department of Civil Protection in the territory of Marzamemi (SR), with the participation of 25 operators of the Malta Civil Protection and 150 volunteers employed in searches for missing persons, rescue operations for people stuck in flooded or unsafe buildings, securing of cultural assets and interventions at sea.
Thanks to the partners University of Palermo, University of Catania and University of Malta who provided scientific support in all phases of the project.
